Gernsheim is a Rhine River cruise port and town in Germany's Hesse state (Gross-Gerau district) with population around 10,000. The town is located approx 18 km (11 mi) southwest of Darmstadt (Hesse state, part of Frankfurt Metro Region) and approx 16 km (10 mi) northeast of Worms (Rhineland-Palatinate state).
Gernsheim is also a cargo port (serving inland container shipping via barges) with a direct port-railway link. Regularly scheduled ferries link to Eich (Rhineland-Palatinate). The town is interconnected via 3 highways (B44, B44a, B426) and Mannheim-Frankfurt railway line (aka Riedbahn).
The settlement was founded by the Romans in the 1st-century AD. Under its current name, it was first mentioned in the mid-9th-century. Gernsheim received its town rights in the mid-14th-century, granted by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV (1346-78). Into Gernsheim were merged the neighboring villages Allmendfeld and Klein-Rohrheim.
Best known tourist attractions include Wallfahrtskirche Maria Einsiedel (15th-century church), Peter Schöffer Haus (museum), Rathaus (Town Hall), Stadthalle (merchant guildhall), river scenery and the annual festivals Rheinisches Fischerfest (Rhine's largest fishing festival, held in August), Strassenfastnacht (street parade), Innenstadtfest (downtown), Weihnachtsmarkt (outdoor Christmas Market).
