Gozo Island is located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and is part of the Republic of Malta. Malta Island (with the country's capital Valletta) is to the southeast. Unlike the bigger Malta, Gozo is more rural (population around 35,000) and popular for its scenic hills. The island's total area is approx 67 km2 (26 mi2). The distance between Gozo and Valletta is approx 43 km (27 mi).

Gozo Island has long been associated with Ogygia Island, home of the Calypso nymph (Homer's Odyssey). In the story, Calypso, who was in love with Odysseus and possessed great supernatural powers, holds him captive for years, until finally releasing him to go on with his journey back home. The island is rich in historic locations like the Ggantija temples. Together with the other Malta's Megalithic Temples, they are among the world's oldest free-standing structures.

Gozo, compared to Malta Island, is less developed. A remarkable geologic feature is the Azure Window. It is a natural stone arch formed millions of years ago after the collapse of a limestone cave. There are a lot of beaches on the isle, as well as seaside resorts, popular with locals and tourists alike. The most popular are Xlendi Bay and Marsalforn. Gozo Island is considered one of the top Mediterranean diving destinations and a center for water sports.

Gozo Island is also famous for its "Karnival" (carnival) celebrations in the summer, featuring live band musical performances and lots of fireworks. The small town of Mgarr is overlooked by Fort Chambray (1749-built by the Knights of Saint John).

The new Gozo Ferry Terminal was opened in 2008. It has a building for around 600 passengers and parking for 200 cars. A fast-ferry service Mgarr/Gozo-Valletta is provided by two companies - Gozo Fast Ferry, and Virtu Ferries. Both operators offer 45-min crossings via high-speed catamaran ferries (Incat Crowther-design) with max passenger capacity 300.

Mgarr also has Yacht Marina. In 2010 the Marina was privatized and is now operated by Harbour Management Company Ltd.
