Great Harbour Cay Bahamas (Berry Islands)

Great Harbour Cay is the largest island in The Bahamas' Berry Islands (district archipelago), with population under 500. The Berry Islands group consists of 30 islands plus 100+ small isles / cays. They were first settled in 1836 with a group of freed from the USA slaves. The country's capital city Nassau (New Providence Island) is located approx 40 mi (65 km) southeast. Larger cruise ships to Great Harbour Cay anchor at sea and transport their passengers ashore (to Great Harbour Cay Marina) via the ship's tender boats.

Among cruisers, Great Harbour Cay is best-known as the nearest large island to Coco Cay (RCI-Royal Caribbean private island property, originally named Little Stirrup Cay) and Great Stirrup Cay (NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line's private island resort). Also close to Great Harbour Cay is the privately-owned Cistern Cay.

Berry islands are served by ferries and two airports (domestic flights only). The islands and cays have no hotels and instead offer as tourist accommodations (for rent) guesthouses and beach villas. Most of the isles are undeveloped, uninhabited and pristinely beautiful. Local residents are usually seasonal.

Among the most popular tourist attractions are snorkelling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing (tuna, grouper, billfish, yellowtail snapper). In May is held an annual fishing tournament. Great Harbour Cay has length 8 mi (13 km) and width 0,5 mi (2,4 km) wide. Great Harbour Cay Airport connects to Nassau (Flamingo Air) and Fort Lauderdale Florida USA (Tropic Ocean Airways, charter planes). Chub Cay Airport (on Chub Cay Island) connects to Nassau (Pineapple Air).
