Great Yarmouth is a port town in Norfolk county (East Anglia / Eastern England), located at the mouth of Yare River, approx 30 km (20 mi) east of Norwich. The town was established as a seaside resort in the 18th century. Before that, it was a major fishing port with well-developed herring fishing industry. In the 20th century, after the discovery of North Sea oil reserves was developed the supply industry serving offshore oil and gas rigs as well as the new offshore wind farms.

Besides its beaches and resorts, other major tourist attractions include The Tollhouse (dungeons from late 13th century), St Nicholas Minster Church (12th century, mediaeval town walls, market place (13th century, among England's largest), 2 piers (Britannia and Wellington), dockside theatre, Scroby Sands (offshore windfarm), full-time circus (Hippodrome).

The seafront resort area (aka The Golden Mile) annually attracts millions of tourists. It features sandy beaches, indoor and outdoor attractions, 12 Amusement Arcades, Marina Centre (city's main Leisure Centre), putting green and golf courses, the horse-racing track, gardens, museums, unique wildlife (Mediterranean gulls).

Since 2006, the restored steamboat Southern Belle (built 1925) provides regular river cruise excursions leaving roundtrip from Haven Bridge.

Port Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth Harbour is a deepwater seaport on the North Sea, built in the period 2007-2009. The port provides the shortest North Sea crossings between the UK and Europe. In 2009 were installed 2 gantry cranes (later removed) with the planned construction of a containership terminal. In 2018 were announced plans for a ferry link to IJmuiden to be served by Seamax Ferries. Since 2015, the seaport is managed by Peel Ports Great Yarmouth. The port mainly serves the oil and gas fields in the southern North Sea, as well as offshore wind farm projects (off UK's East Coast).

Port Great Yarmouth has all 7 quays and terminals:

  • Outer Harbour NT1, NT2, WT3, WT4 and WT5 are quays serving vessels with max LOA length 200 m and max draft 10 m.
  • River Terminal is a dock serving vessels with max LOA length 120 m and max draft 6 m.
  • Great Yarmouth Fendercare Marine is a Jetty serving vessels with max LOA length 50 m and max draft 3 m (10 ft).
  • The ever-first cruise ship arriving in Great Yarmouth was Seabourn Quest - docking at Outer Harbour at 7 am on June 30, 2018, and carrying 458 passengers. They were welcomed by live Great Yarmouth Brass performance quay-side. The top-luxury liner was on 45-day "Northern Summer Skies" cruise itinerary (May 17 - July 1) roundtrip from Dover England.

In mid-February 2019, Port Great Yarmouth received a new gantry crane to support Outer Harbour's cargo lifting operations. The Liebherr-made crane (model LHM280) has a lifting capacity of 84 tons.

In May 2019, Peel Ports Great Yarmouth signed a partnership with the 2019-established ADM Agriculture Ltd (UK supply chain formed via a merger of 4 Ltd companies - ADM Arkady, ADM Direct, Gleadell Agriculture, and Dunns). The deal was for importing animal feed (driven primarily by pig and poultry farming) and exporting Norfolk-farmed produce to Europe and beyond. ADM Agriculture has a newbuild bulk-storage warehouse at port's Outer Harbour.

In March 2023, the Swedish state-owned multinational power company Vattenfall (1909-founded as Kungliga Vattenfallsstyrelsen) announced that Peel Ports Group (UK's second largest port owner/operator - after ABP-Associated British Ports) have won the bidding for Vattenfall’s Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone's operation and maintenance Zone's lifetime of 35 years. When completed, the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone will have the capacity to power ~4,6 million households, ranking it as one of the world's largest.
