Gudvangen is a small port town in Aurland (Sogn og Fjordane, Norway), located at Naeroyfjord's end - where Naeroydalselvi River flows into the fjord.
Translated as "Gods place by the water", Gudvangen is a former Viking settlement (important market center) and one of Norway's most popular tourist travel destibations. According to church records, in 12th century all its inhabitants died during the Great Plague. Aka Black Death, this pandemics in 12th-14th centuries killed over 50% of Europe's entire population. It took several hundred years before the village was repopulated.
Just to the southeast is the Kjelfossen waterfall - among Norway's highest (ranked world's 18th highest) with a total height 755 m (2477 ft). Gudvangen is connected to Europe via highway E16 (passing by the village). To the southwest, this highway goes to Voss, and to the northeast it enters Gudvangentunnelen (Gudvanga Tunnel, length approx 11,5 km / 7 mi) towards Flam, Undredal, and Aurlandsvangen.
Local tourist attractions include breathtaking scenery (scenic valleys and fjords), sightseeing ferry trips (available as roundtrips from both Gudvangen and Flam), fjord cruise tours (by boat through Naeroyfjord), visiting historical sites. Ro-Ro ferries (car and passenger ships) connect Gudvangen directly with Flam and Kaupanger (at Sognefjorden's northern coast).
The most popular tour is through Magical White Caves - a cave-labyrinth featuring a large room (with green lake) and a stone bar (dining area). This roundtrip tour takes 30-45 min. Max group size is 20 people. Helmets and jackets are provided.
