Gythion/Gythio is a port town located in Greece's Laconia/Lacedaemonia region (southeastern Peloponnese Peninsula) with population around 7,000. Gythion was Ancient Sparta's principal seaport and later was an important port until it was destroyed (possibly by an earthquake) in the 4th century AD.

Large-sized cruise ships to Gythio Greece are anchored in front the harbor and their passengers are transported via the ship's tender boats. Smaller ships and superyachts can dock at the quay.

Today, Gythio is a fishing port (locode GRGYT) and among the country's most attractive travel destinations. Its waterfront is backed by Turkish houses built on the steep forested hill behind. Among the popular tourist activities are strolling along the harbor and exploring the historic streets that run parallel to the seafront. There are several fishing taverns serving fresh-caught seafood.

Ancient Cranae is today the small Marathonisi Island, located at 15-min walking distance from the harbour.

Most of Ancient Gythion is submerged below Lakonian Gulf, but there is an ancient theatre and overgrown acropolis.
