Hainburg area's first settlement was Celtic (Braunsberg hill's fortress). The town started to develop around the castle that Holy Roman Emperor Henry III (1016-1056 AD) started to build. By the 13th-century, Hainburg had a 2,5 km / 1,6 mi long stone wall with 2 gates and 15 guard towers. The castle and the town officially merged in the mid-17th-century but were eventually destroyed (in 1683) during the Great Turkish War (1683-1699/between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League - Holy Roman Empire, Poland-Lithuania, Venetian Republic, Muscovia/Russia, Habsburg Hungary). The town and its castle were rebuilt in the early-18th-century.

Besides Danube-Auen NP, Braunsberg's Celtic fortress, other tourist attractions in Hainburg include Wienertor (southwest city gate from the 13th-century, Europe's largest existing medieval gate/now houses the city museum), Ungartor (eastern city gate from 13th-century, with a battlement platform), Fischertor (northwestern city gate facing Danube/13th-century), Halterturm (5-storey square tower with battlements/13th-century), Gotzenturm (octagonal water tower/14th-century), Philippus-und-Jakobus Kirche (13th-century church), Mariensaule (Marian Column/18th-century), Heimenburg (ruins of the medieval city fortifications with 3 gates and 15 towers).
