Hannover is a Leine River/Weser River cruise port and the capital and largest city of Germany's Lower Saxony state (Urban district). By population (around 0,55 million, metro around 1,2 million) the city is ranked Germany's 13th-largest and Norddeutschland/Northern Germany's 3rd-largest - after Hamburg and Bremen.

Leine River flows through Germany's Lower Saxony and Thuringia states. The river is a tributary of Aller River (and Weser River) and has length of 281 km (175 mi). Approx 40 km (25 mi) from Leinefelde (Thuringia), the river enters Lower Saxony running northwards and along Gottingen, Einbeck, Alfeld, Gronau. Then it enters Hanover. Approx 40 km (25 mi) north of the city it joins Aller River to reach North Sea via Weser River. However, only the river's northern waters are navigable, and mainly by cruise ships and very small commercial vessels.
