Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) postponed the launch of Harvest Caye Island until November 2016 - 9 months after it was scheduled for inauguration. The 75-acre (0,12 mi2 / 303,500 m2) private island destination is located in southern Belize. The property was bought by NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd) in August 2013. The completion of the USD 50 million project was originally set for February 16, 2016.
NCL Norwegian developed a premium Caribbean cruise island destination experience at Harvest Caye, Belize. The exclusive NCL cruise port of call features a beach, an expansive swimming pool area with private cabanas, a saltwater lagoon (for water sports), four a-la-carte priced beverage and dining venues, marina pier, lighthouse (with 2 zip-lines). The highest quality amenities and services are delivered to NCL guests in one of the Caribbean's richest ecosystems.
Harvest Caye became NCL's second private cruise port - following Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, which opened in 1977. NCL employs over 400 Belizeans on the island. The company also contributes to Belize's economy by locally sourcing materials and supplies for the island.
The Harvest Caye Island welcomed its first ever NCL cruise ship on November 18, 2016. On a roundtrip itinerary from NOLA (New Orleans), the ship Norwegian Dawn docked at the island, bringing 2340 passengers. They were fortunate to witness an once in a lifetime event - the ribbon-cutting ceremony led by NCLH and Belize Government officials.
In late-May 2020, following financial losses caused by the fleetwide suspension of passenger shipping (due to the global Coronavirus crisis), at its private island Harvest Caye NCLH laid off nearly 300 employees and temporarily shut down cruise operations in Belize.
