Havoysund is on the island's southern coast. This is a small fishing town (population around 1,000). There is a boatyard, petrol station, fish processing factories, doctors, Havoysund Church, sports hall, various shops and museums. The town boasts a varied architecture. All the way along the beach there are same-design houses ("gjenreisingshus") built after WW2 (1939-1945). More houses (up in the valley) were built in the following decades.
Havoysund is one of the Hurtigruten ports along the "Express Route" (Norwegian Coastal Express). This is a regularly scheduled ferry and cruise itinerary in Norway, between the turnaround ports Bergen (southmost) and Kirkenes (northmost).
