Helsingborg is a port city in Scania (southwestern Sweden) with total area approx 38 km2 (15 mi2) and population around 133,000. By metro population (270,000) the city is ranked Sweden's 4th-largest (after Stockholm, Goteborg, Malmo). This is also the closest to Denmark Swedish port - approx 4 km (2 mi) from Helsingor.

The city is on the west coast of southern Gotland and features a stunning panorama across the narrow waterway that separates Sweden from Denmark's Zealand. Ferries to and from Helsingborg (passenger and freight shipping) are operated mainly by Scandlines. The city is connected via highways E4 and E6. Daily trains link Helsingborg with Hamburg, Oslo, Stockholm and Goteborg. Domestic trains link to smaller Swedish towns. Swebus (express bus) services link to Jonkoping, Halmstad, Kristiansand, Goteborg, Stockholm, Copenhagen.

The city (dating back from the early-15th century) was built close to the old town's site, which was known as a trade center as early as the 9th century. A ruined fortress is all that remains of that settlement. Helsingborg was part of Denmark until 1658, when was ceded to Sweden. Several times, however, it was recaptured by Denmark, and officially became under Swedish control in 1710.

The historic city is a scenic coastal area with many old buildings. Its architecture features a picturesque mixture of stone-built churches, Karnan (600-year-old medieval fortress in downtown), modern commercial buildings. Streets vary from small alleys to wide avenues. The main pedestrian street (Kullagatan) was Sweden's first shopping street.

Nearby tourist destinations are Old Viken (fishing village), Hoganas (center of Sweden's ceramics industry - Hoganas Keramik company, established 1909, producing stoneware, cutlery, porcelain tableware), Kullaberg Nature Reserve (near Molle), Soderasen National Park (approx 30 km / 19 mi to the east of the city). From Helsingborg, ferry and cruise ship tourists can travel along the coastal parklands and visit Sofiero - manor house and the summer residence of King Gustaf VI Adolf (1882-1973).

The cruise port in 2019 had scheduled 5 ship calls and handled ~5,000 tourists (passengers and crew). In October 2021 was completed the new City Pier cruise terminal where can berth smaller- to medium-sized ships. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, all booked ship visits in 2021 were canceled.

Port Helsingborg's main "cruise shipping" rivals are Copenhagen, Stockholm and Goteborg.

Helsingborg cruise terminal

Helsingborg's North Harbor is where smaller cruise vessels and ferries are docked/berthed. Adjacent to the harbour is city's boat marina. Both are within short walking distance (15-min) from downtown. Scheduled for completion and inauguration in 2020 is the new passenger terminal City Pier.

Large-sized cruise ships dock at Port Helsingborg and transport their passengers (via ship's tender boats) to downtown (near Kullagatan - city's main / shopping street). Helsingborg Ferry Port is on Oresund sound. The harbor is divided into 4 areas (harbors) - North, South, West, Marina. Knutpunkten ferry terminal (North Harbour / downtown) is city's ferry-train-bus hub and main ferry terminal (operated by Scandlines). The facility has a free car parking (outside, not 24-hour guarded).

"HH Ferry route" is operated by regularly scheduled car and passenger ferries, with daily departures from both Helsingborg and Helsingor. This ferry line is world's busiest - with 70+ departures in each direction daily. Helsingor's car ferry terminal is connected to the city's main railway station, from where trains depart every 20 minutes to Copenhagen.
