Hilpoltstein is a Main-Danube Canal cruise port and town in Germany's Bavaria state (Roth district) with population around 14,000. The town is located near Lake Rothsee, approx 30 km (19 mi) south of Nuremberg.
The town's origins (Hilpoltstein Castle) date back to the 10th century. It became part of Bavaria state in 1799.
Among the main tourist attractions are Rathaus (town hall), the town wall's remains, Pfarrkirche St Johannes (church), Jahrsdorfer-Haus (mansion), Hotel Schwarzes Ross/Gasthaus (guest house with historic brewery and museum dedicated to the town's history and handcrafts).
The list of major annual festivals and events includes a live concert of the local brass band (held in April), Medieval festival with knights tournament (held in May), Challenge Roth (worlds largest ultra-distance triathlon / held in July), Kite Festival (September's last weekend), Burgfest (folk-fair, medieval pageant, beer tent, flea market, fireworks / during August's first weekend), Christmas Market (Advent's first weekend / late November or early December).
