Homer is a port town located on Kenai Peninsula's southern tip, in Alaska USA. The town has population around 5,000. A most distinguishing feature is the Homer Spit, which is a gravel bar extending into the bay on which Homer Harbor lies.

Homer AK covers a total area of approx 58 km2 (22 ml2), of which the land is 27 km2 (11 ml2) and 31 km2 (12 ml2) is water. The town's population is around 5,000. The only road that serves it is Sterling Highway. The highway starts from Tern Lake Junction of Seward Highway and goes approx 90 ml (140 km) south of Anchorage AK to Homer.

Much of the coastline and Homer Spit sank tragically in March 1964 during Good Friday earthquake. After the earthquake, little vegetation was able to survive on Homer Spit. The USCG (Coast Guard) has a long-term lease anchorage on Homer Spit. The USCG currently has in Alaska a fleet of 6 cutters, of which one is based in Homer AK.

Salmon and halibut sport fishing, along with commercial fishing and tourism are the town's dominant industries.

"Kachemak Bay Research Reserve" and "Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge" cohost a visitor center with displays known as "Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center". The town also features a historical and cultural museum called "The Pratt Museum".

Homer Harbor's deep-water dock is built on the Homer Spit. This is a land mass (length 7,2 km / 4,5 ml, elevation 19 ft / 6 m above sea level) that juts out mainland Alaska (Kenai Peninsula) into Kachemak Bay.

Homer Harbor contains both deep-water and shallow-water docking facilities. The boat harbor serves around 1500 boats (commercial / fishing and cruise) during the peak summer season. Part of the Homer Spit is The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon. This is a man-made waterway with camping grounds, hotels, restaurants. Also here is the Salty Dawg Saloon for which construction have been used materials from several of the town's historic buildings.

Homer Spit also has the world's longest road built into ocean waters.  Via this road, the distance from the cruise pier at Homer Harbor to downtown is approx 5 km (3 ml) or 10-15-min drive. Free shuttle bus service is provided.
