Hrisey Island is located in Eyjafjordur fjord (off Iceland's northern coast) and approx 35 km (22 mi) north of Akureyri. The island covers an area of approx 8 km2 (3 mi2). In 2004, it became part of the Akureyri municipality (which also includes Grimsey Island).

The island has a length of 7,5 km (4,7 mi), a width of 2,5 km (1,6 mi) and a population of around 120. A ferry connects Hrisey to Arskogssandur (mainland Iceland) - travel time 15 min.

Until the 1960s the island was a fishing base and had a herring salting factory. In 1999 was closed its fish freezing plant. Currently, Hrisey's economy is largely based on cruise ship tourism as the island has developed a reputation for a birdwatching destination. The island's northern part is a privately owned nature reserve. The killing of birds on the rest of the island is also forbidden. There are 40 bird species on the island, including rock ptarmigans (in the grouse family), Arctic terns and eiders (seaducks).
