Hvalsey (Qaqortukulooq/Whale Island) houses Eystribyggd/Eastern Settlement (2017-listed by UNESCO as a Heritage Site) which is part of the Kujataa archeological sites with Greenland's largest Old Norse/Viking ruins.

Kujataa stretches approx 250 km (155 mi), from Egger Island (Cape Farewell) to Nunarsuit Island, and includes 5x World Heritage areas - Brattahld (in Qassiarsuk), Gardar (in Igaliku, Greenland's first modern Inuit farm), Sissarluttoq (Norse manor house), Tasikuluulik (in Vatnahverfi, Greenland's longest road connecting numerous Inuit sheep farms) and Qaqortukulooq (in Hvalsey, has 13x sites, including Greenland's best-preserved Norse ruins).

As cruise port, Hvalsey is usually visited in tandem with Qaqortoq (located approx 18 km / 11 mi) to the northeast) and on the same day of the cruise line's itinerary. Both Qaqortoq and Hvalsey are tender ports, which means that the vessels (luxury ships and superyachts) anchor offshore, and their passengers are ferried (weather permitting) via the ship's tender boats or Zodiacs (large-capacity motorized boats).

Hvalsey's scenery is marked by a grassy meadow dotted with granite rocks and surrounded by beautiful mountains, free-roaming sheep and horses, 10th-century Norse ruins (Viking colony), Hvalsey Fjord Church/Hvalso Kirke (early-14th-century Catholic church ruins). Hvalso Kirke is exceptionally well-preserved and constructed from carefully chosen stones - some with weight 5+ tons.

According to the Old Norse sagas, Hvalsey was settled by Thorkell Farserk, a shipmate and relative of Erik Thorvaldsson/Erik the Red (Rogaland Norway-born Viking chieftain and explorer) who in the late-10th century founded Eystribyggd (Greenland's ever-first settlement).
