Ilha Grande Island (Angra dos Reis, Brazil) is located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro (state). The island is accessed by ships via Vila do Abraao (port town), but still remains largely undeveloped.
For nearly a century it was officially quaranteened by the Brazillian government because there was a leper colony on it, and later - the high-security prison "Candido Mendes" housing some of the Brazil's most dangerous prisoners. In 1994 the prison was closed.
Today Ilha Grande island is a popular cruise ship and tourist destination featuring prestine tropical beaches, beautiful scenery, rugged landscape, luxuriant vegetation. Most of its territory is within the Ilha Grande State Park, and the remainder is subject to stringent development restrictions.
