Ilheus is a major port city located in Bahia - Brazil's southern coastal region, The city is approx 210 km (130 ml) south of Salvador de Bahia, state's capital.

The city was founded in 1534 under the name "Vila de Sao Jorge dos Ilheus". This is one of Brazil's major tourism centers, with population around 225,000 and total area of approx 1840 km2 (711 ml2).

Downtown Ilheus is 1 km (0,7 ml) away from the Atlantic Ocean. Current-day Ilheus depends almost entirely on tourism, attracting both domestic and international tourists with beautiful beaches, Portuguese cultural heritage, history, buildings and culinary distinctions. Ilheus is the home town of Jorge Amado - the country's most popular writer with over 25 novels translated into 48 languages. He is also in the bestsellers lists in 52 countries.

The following map shows the location of Porto de Ilheus (aka Porto de Malhado). The port is Brazil's largest and among the world's biggest exporters of cocoa. Cruise ships also dock here. The port is in the urban area - located at the end of Avenida Soares Lopes street in the neighborhood Cidade Nova. This is an open sea port so its entrance is on land.

Port's access is via road (highways BA-262 and BA-415), also by river and sea. The confluence of the rivers Almada and Cachoeira is navigable, but serves only smaller vessels (including yachts and fishing boats). The port's entrance has width of 200 m (660 ft) and depth / max draft of 10 m (33 ft). The port's access channel (length approx 1 km) is in the north.
