Staten Island (Isla de los Estados/Island of the States) is part of Argenta's Tierra del Fuego Province (Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands) whose capital city is Ushuaia. The island is located approx 29 km (18 mi) off the archipelago's eastern extremity (Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego), being separated by Le Maire Strait. Staten Island is also close to Isla Navarino (approx 210 km / 130 mi) to the west. The distance to Ushuaia is approx 250 km (155 mi) to the west.
Isla de los Estados is declared "Ecological, Historic, and Tourist Provincial Reserve" (nature park) accessible only via boat tours departing from Ushuaia. Puerto Parry Naval Station (1978-established) is the island's only settlement located on the northern coast and in a narrow fjord. The Argentine Navy base is manned by a 4-man team (marines on a 45-day rotation) who monitor the shipping traffic and also provide emergency assistance.
As a cruise destination, Staten Island is included in the schedules of major expedition-style travel companies like Lindblad-National Geographic, Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd, Seabourn. The itineraries usually also visit the British Overseas Territory Falkland Islands (approx 470 km / 290 mi to the northeast).
Besides expedition cruise ships and polar-class superyachts, Isla de los Estados is also a popular travel destination visited by sailboats and smaller yachts. The island's scenery features dense low forests, snow-covered peaks, numerous lakes, and deapwater fjords (mainly on the north and east coasts). Wildlife includes mainly Magellanic penguins, orcas/killer whales, seals, seabirds (seagulls, cormorants). Deer and goats were later introduced.
Staten Island has length ~65 km (40 mi/east-west), width ~15 km (9 mi/north-south, land area approx 534 km2 (206 mi2), highest elevation point 823 m (2700 ft) and its coastline is marked by numerous bays and surrounding small isles and rocks. Cape St John (on the east coast) is the landmark for vessels to avoid the Le Maire Strait's strong currents and the low tide.
