Magdalena Island (Isla Magdalena) is in the Strait of Magellan (Chile), located approx 32 km (20 mi) northeast of Punta Arenas. Isla Magdalena is the breeding location for seabirds, including Magellanic penguins. The penguin colony is constantly monitored since 1998, with estimated 63000+ pairs. Currently, the island is uninhabited.
Cruise ship passengers can walk through the island via walking trail (marked path) along the coastline. It leads to the lighthouse with an exhibition of photos and information on marine life. The nearby Marta Island shelters cormorants, skuas, sea lions.
