Isle of Bute is the second largest of the Firth of Clyde Islands - Scotland's 5th largest island group - after the Hebrides (Inner and Outer), Orkneys and Shetlands. Administratively, the island is part of Argyll and Bute. Bute Island covers a total area of approx 122 km2 (47 mi2) and has population around 7,000.
By size, the list of main (largest) Firth of Clyde Islands is as follows: Arran (432 km2), Bute (122 km2), Great Cumbrae (12 km2), Holy Isle (3 km2), Little Cumbrae (3 km2), Sanda (1,3 km2), Ailsa Craig (1 km2).
Bute Island connects with mainland Scotland via two ferries operated by Caledonian MacBrayne: from Rothesay to Wemyss Bay, and from Rhubodach to Colintraive. The main ferry service to Bute Island is from Wemyss Bay (located on A78 coast road between Ayr and Glasgow).

Cruise ships to Isle of Bute dock (anchor) at Rothesay - a ferry port town on the eastern coast. Some ships may also stop at Rhubodach - a small ferry port on the northeastern coast.
During summer, Bute Island (Rothesay) is regularly visited by PS Waverley - the world's oldest (only one) original and still operational paddle-wheel steamship.
