Isle of Raasay is located between Skye and mainland Scotland (Applecross Peninsula). The island is best known as the birthplace Sorley MacLean (1911-1996) - one of Scotland's most significant poets. Raasay Island covers a total area of approx 62 km2 (24 mi2) and has population around 200.

The highest elevation point (the flat-topped peak Dùn Caan) is 444 m (1457 ft). Raasay is surrounded by several smaller isles (most named with the prefix Eilean), including Fladday, Tigh, Aird nan Gobhar, an Inbhire, Holoman, Manish, Fraoch, Glas, Griana-sgeir, an Fhraoich.

The island's main settlement is Inverarish - on the southwestern coast.

Raasay Island's primary employers are tourism, the ferry company, crofting (small-scale food production) and sea fishing. Some of the locals work on Isle of Skye. Raasay has only a primary school (older students ferry each day to Portree / Skye Island). Ferry travel to Skye is approx 25-min (Inverarish to Sconser).

Among the island's most popular tourist attractions are Brochel Castle's ruins and numerous walking paths. Inverarish has a shop (with post office service). Hotel accommodations are available in Raasay House. Various holiday homes are also available in the island's southern part.

In 2007, the island's population signed a contract with several building contractors to build a community center (opened in May 2010). In 2008 started the construction works for the new Churchton Bay ferry terminal (inaugurated in August 2010). Raasay House is a 4 star hotel with an outdoor activity centre consisting of restaurant, cafe, and bar.
