Kalundborg is a Baltic Sea port and town located on Zealand Island (Denmark) with population around 16,000. The cruise port is located approx 110 km (68 mi) from Copenhagen. The Port (locode DKKAL) is mainly visited by cruise ships operating on itineraries along Norway's coast.
Kalundborg is on the northwestern coast of Zealand (Denmark's largest island) and is famous for the broadcasting transmitter and Denmark's largest coal-fired power station. A major tourist attraction is the 5-spired Vor Frue Kirke (early-12th-century Church of Our Lady).
The town is the traditional seat of the Lerche family and here is their stately estate (Lerchenborg/manor house) located in the outskirts, approx 4 km / 2,5 mi to the south of the city.
As ferry port, Kalundborg (locode DKKAL) is linked to Samso Island. The seaport plays a central role in the economy and is self-governing/managed with independent finances. Kalundborg Container Terminal is served on a weekly basis by the agency/shipping line Unifeeder. Schultz Shipping is another major local shipping company. Statoil Refining Denmark operates the country's largest oil refinery located on Kalundborg Harbor. The refinery's annual production capacity is ~6,6 million tons of oil products. Haldor Topsoe is one of the companies with facilities located at Kalundborg Tank Terminal.
In October 2021, Global Ports Holding PLC (GPH/the world's largest cruise port operator) signed a 20-year concession with Port Kalundborg to manage the port's cruise shipping operations. GPH plans to develop Kalundborg as an alternative cruise port to Copenhagen.
In 2018, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 6 ship calls (9000+ passengers) by the Marella UK's liner Marella Discovery. The vessel's maiden visit (June 1) was during a 14-day roundtrip from Newcastle UK to ports in Scandinavia and Russia.
On October 11, 2017, officially started the construction works for the new port area of Kalundborg's New West Port.
- The new cruise port is sized approx 330,000 m2 (3,55 million ft2) and includes a containership terminal (doubles as cruise berth) with a 500-m / 1640-ft long quay/dock. The new port's water depth is 15 m (49 ft) making it Zealand's only seaport with a deepwater quay.
- The project was divided into 2 separate contracts - one for land-based construction works and one for dredging, with contractor companies, respectively, "NCC Industry" and "Wasa Dredging".
- New West Port's expansion was completed in February 2019.
By 2025, GPH plans to build a new/dedicated cruise terminal, investing ~EUR 6 million (~USD 6M) in this project.
The largest passenger liner handled at Port Kalundborg so far is AIDAnova (2018-built), with LOA length 337 m (1106 ft), volume 183900 GT-tons, max passenger capacity 6600 (plus 1500 crew).
Kalundborg cruise terminal
In April 2019 was officially inaugurated Kalundborg's new cruise terminal, which construction started in October 2017. The facility has capacity to handle/berth even world's largest passenger ships with a quay length of 500 m (1640 ft) and water depth 15 m (50 ft). The quay is also equipped with 150-ton bollards (short vertical posts used for ship mooring) and heavy rubber fenders (placed quayside at every 15 m). The terminal is easy to access, so tugboat assistance for docking vessels is not required.
As the new terminal is located outside the town, complimentary shuttle bus service is provided for passengers and crew all day long during ship calls. The drive distance from the cruise port to downtown is ~10 min.
