Kanazawa is a port city and the capital of Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture, located on Honshu Island's western coast. The city (population around 470,000) is bordered by two national parks (Hakusan and Noto Peninsula) and also by Nihon Arupusu (Japanese Alps).

The modern city was officially founded in 1889, and has been developed as principal seaport of Hokuriku region (within island's Chubu region). Kanazawa was one of several major cities not firebombed by the USA at the end of WW2 (1939-1945). As a result, town's architectural heritage has been largely preserved.

Best-known tourist attractions include Old Town's remains of walls, gates, Maeda Castle (16th-century), Kenroku-en (one of Japan's "Great Three Gardens" designated "Special Places of Scenic Beauty" and featuring tea houses, tranquil ponds, bridges, bamboo forests, wildlife), Gyokusen-en Garden (on 2 levels), Omicho Market (outdoor shops selling local seafood and produce), Seisonkaku Villa, Nagamachi Samurai Quarter, Higashi Pleasure District, Honda Museum, Kanazawa Yasue Gold Leaf Museum (arts and crafts). Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan's high-quality gold leaf (even put into food).
