Kelheim is a Danube River cruise port, town and municipality Germany's Bavaria state, with population around 16,000. The town is located at the confluence of two rivers - Danube (south) and Altmuhl (north). Kelheim is famous for its Iron Age oppidum (large fortified settlement) mentioned in Ptolemy's Geography as Alcimoennis.
A small promontory (raised land) fortification is located on Danube's bank and has a series of short ramparts (defensive walls) aligned with the riverbank. The settlement under its current name (Kelheim) was first mentioned in the 9th century AD, and received its town rights in 1151 AD.
Other best-known landmarks and tourist attractions include Befreiungshalle (monument on the Michelsberg hill), Donaudurchbruch (Danube Gorge nature reserve), Kloster Weltenburg (abbey / 7th-century Benedictine monastery, one of Bavaria's oldest), Wipfelsfurt (valley drained from Danube River, between the Weltenburg Abbey and Kelheim), Einsiedelei Klosterl (15th-century hermitage dedicated to St Nicholas). Kelheim is also the home of the brewing company "G. Schneider & Sohn" (founded in 1872). This is the town's oldest and largest wheat beer brewery, distributing its products across 28 countries. Weltenburg Abbey is also famous for its dark ale, which brewing dates back to 1050 AD.
