Koh Phangan Island (aka Ko Pha Ngan) is part of Thailand's Chumphon Archipelago (Surat Thani Province) in the Gulf of Thailand. The island has land area approx 125 km2 (48 mi2) and a population of around 12,000. The access to Koh Phangan is via regularly scheduled ferries and day tour boats linking with Surat Thani, Chumphon, Koh Samui (distance 9 km / 6 mi), and Koh Tao (2-hour ride). Mainland Thailand is approx 70 km (45 mi) away. Ferries stop at Thongsala and Haad Rin (the island's largest settlements).
The scenery is dominated by hills with lush jungles, numerous luxury hotels and beach resorts, shopping and dining options, white-sand pristine beaches, diving sites, nightlife, "Moon Party" beach celebrations. Island's best-rated is Panviman Resort Koh Phangan. Land transportation is mainly via converted pickup trucks and taxis, as well as by rental bikes and 4x4s. Annually, Koh Pha Ngan receives 450,000+ tourists.
