Krk Island is located in the northern Adriatic Sea (near Rijeka) and is part of Croatia's Primorje-Gorski Kotar county. By total land area (approx 406 km2 / 157 mi2) the equally-sized islands Kirk and Cres are the largest in the Adriatic Sea. Krk Island (known as Veglia in Italian) has a total population of around 20,000 and the highest elevation point (Mt Obzova) 568 m / 1864 ft. The scenery is rocky and hilly.
The island's largest town and main cruise port (Krk) has a population of over 6,000.
The settlement was founded by the Romans under the name Curicum. From that period are the ruins of thermal baths and the town's defensive walls. In 812 AD, following the Pax Nicephori (aka Treaty of Aachen - peace treaty of 803, between Francia and Byzantium) the entire Kirk Island (known as Vekla / Veglia) was ceded to the Byzantine Empire. Kirk Town was conquered by the Republic of Venice (697-1797) two times in 1001 AD and 1118 AD. In the period 1480-1797, the entire island was under the Venetian rule. In 1822, Kirk Island became part of the Austrian Empire (1804-1867), together with Cres Island and Losinj Island. In 1920, Kirk was handed over to Croatia.
Krk Island is connected to mainland Croatia via Krk Bridge (length 1430 m / 4692 ft) ranked among the world's longest concrete bridges. On the island is also Rijeka International Airport (in Omisalj), an oil terminal (managed by Port Rijeka) and a petrochemical plant. Due to its proximity to Slovenia, Germany, Austria, and Italy, Krk Island is a popular travel destination for tourists mainly from Hungary and Romania.
On January 1, 2021, officially started operations Krk's LNG terminal with the first LNG (liquefied natural gas) delivery. The 2008-built LNG tanker Tristar Ruby (IMO 9333606) offloaded 143,000 m3 of LNG from the USA. The new floating Krk LNG terminal has annual gas capacity 2,6 billion m3.

Most cruise ships to Krk Island dock at Krk - port town on the central-southern coast. Ferries dock at Valbiska. Smaller ships may alternatively visit Omisalj (north-western coast).
Krk is a tendering cruise port, which means that ships anchor at sea and transport their passengers ashore via ship's tender boats.
