Kushiro (Kushiro-shi) is the principal port and the capital city of Japan's Kushiro Subprefecture, located on Hokkaido Island's central-eastern coast. By population (around 180,00), it is ranked the island's largest city. Until 1869, the town was named Kusuri, and it received city status in 1922. In 2005, the city was expanded via merger with two neighboring towns (Onbetsu and Akan).
In July 1899, Port Kushiro (locode JPKUH) was established as an "open port" allowing international shipping trade with the USA and UK. The seaport is important as an ice-free harbor during winter months. In addition to the seaport, Kushiro is also served by Kushiro Airport - located approx 17 km (10 mi) northwest from downtown. The airport serves only domestic flights (by the carriers Air Do, All Nippon Airways, ANA Wings, HAC-Hokkaido Air System, Japan Airlines, Peach Aviation) offering direct flights to Tokyo, Sapporo and Osaka.
The city is also served by Super Ozora (express trains) linking to Sapporo with 7 daily departures. JR Hokkaido (Hokkaido Railway Company) operates two railways - Nemuro Line (Chokubetsu - Kushiro - Onbetsu - Shiranuka - Otanoshike - Kushiro - Fuji (Shizuoka) - Kushiro - Musa) and Senmo Line. A freight-only railway runs within the city (between Harutori and Shireto).
From Kushiro are offered bus excursions to Kushiro-Shitsugen National Park and Akan Mashu National Park, both located in Hokkaido Island's eastern part. These are Hokkaido's oldest NPs.
- Kushiro-Shitsugen NP is best known for its wetlands (distinct ecosystems flooded by water). Kushiro-Shitsugen translates as "Kushiro Wetlands/Swamp/Marshland). It was designated as NP in 1987, has land area ~269 km2 (104 mi2), contains japan's largest reedbed tracks (waterlogged depressions/designated "national natural monument") and through the Park flows Kushiro River (length 154 km / 96 mi)) originating from Lake Kussharo.
- Akan Mashu NP's scenery is marked by volcanic craters and forests. The Park has land area ~905 km2 (350 mi2) and is best known for its crystal clear lakes, hot springs, and large Marimo (lake ball/moss ball/Cladophora ball).
