Port Langnas (locode FILAN) is Aland's second seaport that serves passenger ships (cruiseferries) on the routes Finland-Sweden. Aland's principal port and the territory's capital city is Mariehamn. Aland is an autonomous Finnish territory grouping ~6500 islands (total land area approx 1580 km2 / 610 mi2) with combined population around 30,000.
Langnas is approx 30 km (20 mi) to the east from Mariehamn/road distance. Regularly scheduled ferry services (daily crossings) via Langnas are provided by the companies VIKING LINE and TALLINK-SILJA LINE. Their ships link Aland-Langnas with Stockholm Sweden (travel time 6,5 hours) and Turku Finland (travel time 4 hours). FINNLINES provides twice-daily/14 weekly crossings linking Langnas with Kapellskar Sweden (travel time 3 hours) and Naantali Finland (5 hours).
From Langnas start ferries to the islands, Snacko, Galtby, Overo, Kokar. The Aland-based ferry company Alandstrafiken has 10 ships providing regular inter-island crossings and limited services linking to mainland Finland.
Langnas' new ferry port terminal (1999-inaugurated) has a deepwater quay (fitted with a smart mooring system) and berthing capacity to handle even the largest ferries (serving the route Stockholm-Turku). Langnas Harbour is used as an alternative to Mariehamn's Western Harbour (Aland's principal ferry port).
Prior to July 1999, Aland Islands were a tax-free zone, which hugely benefitted the local economy as all ferry shipping companies with Sweden-Finland lines (linking Stockholm-Kapellskar with Naantali-Helsinki-Turku) included Langnas as call port along their routes. Unfortunately for Aland, duty-free sales were outlawed by the European Union 4 years after Finland joined the EU in 1995.
