Lautoka is the 2nd largest port city of Fiji (after Suva), located to the west of Viti Levu Island and approx 24 km (15 mi) north of Nadi.

Lautoka is in the heart of sugar cane growing region. Famous as "Sugar City", Lautoka covers land area of 16 km2 (6 mi2) and has population over 50,000.

The city's main Sugar Mill was opened in 1903, and is currently the biggest employer. Built between 1899-1903 for Colonial Sugar Refining Company (Australian company founded 1855), today Sugar Mill employs around 1300 workers. Other major industries include clothing manufacturing, timber milling, brewery, distillery, blending, jewellery, steelworks, hatchery, paints, construction, fishing.
