Leer is a Leda River/Ems River cruise port and town (independent city) in Germany's Lower Saxony state, with population around 35,000. The town is located on Leda River (Ems River's tributary) and near the Germany-Holland border. It is directly connected to the Netherlands (Groningen and Emden) via railway and highway, as well as to Bremen (via A28 autobahn). Leer is approx 30 km (19 mi) from Wattenmeer (Wadden Sea's coast) but is accessed by large ships via Ems.

The settlement (initially named Hleri) was founded in early-8th-century and first mentioned (as Leer) in written documents in mid-9th-century. In the 14th-15th-centuries, the town developed as a major river port serving East Frisia's shipping trade with Germany's Hanseatic cities. It officially received town rights in 1823 - granted by King George IV of the UK (1762-1830, reign 1820-30) and King of Hanover.

Leer's railway connecting to Emden and Rheine (Ruhr industrial area) was inaugurated in 1854, and in 1856 (via Westbahn) to Germany's central railway network. Leer received its status as an independent town in 1955. Best-known tourist attractions include the old castles Harderwykenburg, Haneburg, Evenburg, Philippsburg, as well as Leer-Nuttermoor (160-m high telecom tower), Bunting Teemuseum (tea museum). Nearly 1/5th of Germany's merchant fleet is registered in Leer. Bunting Group (Bunting Beteiligungs AG) is one of the town's main employers. The company owns several German supermarket chains and is best-known for its teas (produced by the subsidiary Bunting Teehandelshaus GmbH / trading tea since 1806).

As cruise port, Leer is included in the regular schedules of two of Europe's largest river cruise companies - Phoenix Reisen and Nicko Cruises (brand of Mystic Cruises). Next tables show the ports sequences of two Leer-visiting itineraries with port times and prices per person (double occupancy cabin rates).

(Phoenix Reisen) 10-day "Holland and Belgium" cruise tour itinerary roundtrip from homeport Dusseldorf is operated by the chartered from Feenstra Rijn Lijn ship Calypso and priced from ~USD 1600 pp.
