Lehnitz is a Havel River cruise port and district of Oranienburg City (Germany's Brandenburg state), located north of the country's capital Berlin. Lehnitz has population around 4,000 and connects Oranienburg to Berlin via Bahnhof Lehnitz (railway station on the S-Bahn's S1 route).

Nearby is Lehnitzsee (lake) extending over 2,3 km (1,5 mi) in the north-south direction. The lake's width varies between 250-400 m (820-1300 ft). In 1914 the lake became part of Havel-Oder via a navigable man-made waterway from Malzer Kanal (via Lehnitzschleuse) to the lake's northern shores. As part of Bundeswasserstrasse (federal waterway), Lehnitzsee serves predominantly commercial shipping but is also popular for boat tours, outdoor recreational and sports activities.

Lehnitzschleuse (river lock) connects the different water levels of the Havel-Oder waterway between Schleuse Spandau (lock on Hohenzollernkanal) and Schiffshebewerk Niederfinow (boat lift).

In 2005, through the Lehnitz Lock were carried nearly 2,9 million tons of cargo. In 2009, through the lock passed a total of 21160 vessels, including 11180 riverboats (cruise ships and pleasure boats) and 6292 cargo ships (barges). In 2014, the cargo tonnage was over 1,5 million tons, and the number of vessels 5482 (barges) plus 10784 pleasure boats and 242 cruise ships.

Oranienburg is the capital of the Oberhavel district and has population around 45,000. The road distance to Berlin is approx 35 km (22 mi). Besides Lehnitz, Oranienburg's other 8 districts are Friedrichsthal, Germendorf, Malz, Oranienburg, Sachsenhausen, Schmachtenhagen, Wensickendorf, and Zehlendorf. The town (as Botzow) was established in the early-12th century AD as a single castle surrounded by a settlement of craftsmen and traders. The town was renamed to Oranienburg in 1653. Oranienburg is served by Berliner Nordbahn (railway) also linking directly to Rostock.

Due to heavy bombing by US aircraft at the end of WW2 (1935-45), Oranienburg is famous as Germany's only town with systematic searches for unexploded bombs. These searches are conducted in areas shown on aerial postwar photos and using metal detectors. By the year 2017 were found ~200 such bombs, with 350-400 remaining bombs yet to be discovered.
