Leros Island (aka Lero) is is an island in southern Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean) and part of Greece's Dodecanese Archipelago that groups 15 larger islands plus 150 smaller isles. Leros has permanent population around 8,000 and is located approx 317 km (170 mi) south of Piraeus-Athens.
Island's largest towns are Agia Marina (municipality center, main ferry port, permanent population ~3,000), Lákki (ferry port, ~2,000), Xirokampos (~1,000), Kamara (~600) and Alinda (~500). Leros is popular for its pristine beaches (~ 71 km / 44 mi of coastline) and the medieval castle (built by the Knights of Saint John, former Byzantine fortress). Boat tours are offered to the nearby islands Patmos, Lipsi/Leipsoi, Kalymnos, Agia Kyriaki, Farmakos.
Leros has a dedicated cruise/ferry port and an airport (Leros Municipal Airport) serving domestic flights. Leros is served by regularly scheduled (daily) passenger ferries running the routes from Piraeus to the Dodecanese Islands. The company Blue Star Ferries runs 4 weekly crossings from Piraeus to Leros, with travel time ~8,5 hours. Catamaran ships (fast ferries) additionally connect to most Dodecanese isles. Ferry travel from Athens takes ~9-10 hours.
Alternatively, Leros can be reached via 45-min flight from Athens to Kos Island, from where via boat travel Kos-Leros is 1-2 hours. Leros Airport serves flights by the airlines Olympic Air (Athens) and Sky Express (Astypalaia Island, Kalymnos Island, Kos Island, Rhodes Island).
