Loreto (aka Concho) is a port town located on Gulf of California (in Mexico's Baja California Sur state) with population around 15,000. The town is approx 350 km (220 mi) north of La Paz (state's capital city). Very close to Loreto (direct distance approx 10 km / 6 mi) are the two uninhabited islands (popular for scuba diving and snorkeling) Isla del Carmen (to the east) and Isla Coronado (to the northeast).
The town has 7 buildings from the 18th-20th centuries, designated as historical monuments by Mexico's federal government. The most popular is Mision de Nuestra Senora de Loreto Concho (built 1697) at the start of El Camino Real - the historic corridor following north and ending in Sonoma CA USA.
Five historical buildings are found in the neighboring town San Javier, most importantly Mision de San Francisco Javier (the best-preserved on the Baja California Peninsula). Also popular as landmarks are the ruins of Mission of San Bruno (Baja California's first mission / from 1683) located approx 20 km (12 mi) north of Loreto. Museo de las Misiones Jesuíticas has an impressive collection of Jesuit art, tools and weapons from the 17th-18th centuries.
Sierra de la Giganta (mountains) are popular for the cave paintings in rock shelters and canyons. The nearest to Loreto sites include Cuevas Pintas (15 km / 9 mi to the west) and La Pinguica (60 km / 37 mi to the north). Their cave paintings are worldwide famous and some are listed by UNESCO.
Loreto is also popular as an excellent sport fishing destination and tourism is the region's main source of employment.
