Lulea is a Baltic Sea port and city in northern Sweden (Norrbotten County). By population (around 50,000) the city is ranked Sweden's 25th largest and Norbotten's largest. By annual shipping volumes, Port Lulea (locode SELLA) is ranked Sweden's 7th-largest.

As cruise port, Lulea is visited by smaller-sized ships and superyachts. Lulea Airport is approx 7 km (4 mi) southeast of downtown (near Kallax) and by annual passenger traffic is ranked Sweden's 5th-largest (around 1,2 million pax per year) as well as Norrland's largest. The airport is also used by Norrbotten Wing (Swedish Air Force command/aka F21). Regularly scheduled domestic flights link to Stockholm, Goteborg, Pajala. Seasonal regular flights link to the UK (London). Seasonal charter flights link to Spain's Canaries (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura), Greece (Rhodes Island, Samos Island, Cyprus Island/Larnaca, Crete Island/ Chania), Turley (Antalya).

Car and passenger ferries link Lulea with Finland (Vaasa, Helsinki) and Poland (Gdansk). Intercity trains connect to Kiruna, Stockholm, Goteborg, Umea, and also with Narvik (Norway).

Lulea received town status in 1621 and started to expand in the late-19th-century as the industries started to grow. Most of the town was destroyed during the fire in 1887. The current-day city's economy is based largely on trade, science research, steel industry (SSAB), engineering and automotive industry (Scania Ferruform, Gestamp), education (University of Technology), IT industry, services. Curiously, in Lulea was opened the world's first shopping mall (in 1955). The city is popular among domestic tourists for its annual festivals, most of which are held at the harbor.
