Maastricht is a Meuse River/Rhine River cruise port and the capital city of the Netherlands' Limburg province, with population around 120,000 (metro around 280,000).

The town quickly developed from a Roman settlement to medieval religious center, garrison, industrial city, cultural center. here are located a total of 1677 heritage sites - Holland's 2nd highest number (after Amsterdam). The city became famous with the Maastricht Treaty (signed February 1992) forming the European Union and establishing the EUR currency. Among tourists, the city is popular as recreation and shopping destination, as well as for its historical buildings.

Maastricht's river port (Beatrixhaven) is connected with Belgium and the rest of the Netherlands by water via Meuse River, Juliana Canal, Albert Canal and Zuid-Willemsvaart. Regular boat connections to other cities are not available, but boat tours for tourists link Maastricht with cities in Belgium (including Liege).
