Maceio is a seaport, largest city and the capital of Brazil's Alagoas state, with population around 1 million. This part of Brazil features numerous lakes and maceios (sea flows). Port Jaragua is the cargo and cruise port of Maceio City. The port is located in a natural deep-water harbour and has modern docking terminals serving various types of vessels. During Brazil's colonial times, major exports from here included coconut, spices, sugar, tobacco.
Maceio City is served by Zumbi dos Palmares Airport which is located approx 25 km (16 ml) from downtown. The airport serves the carriers Andes Líneas Arreas, Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Gol Airlines, LATAM Argentina and LATAM Brasil. Regularly scheduled flights connect to domestic destinations (Brasília, Salvador, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Natal, Campinas, Belo Horizonte) and seasonally to Spain (Cordoba-Andalusia).
Maceio is famous with its Federal University of Alagoas and numerous beautiful beaches. Sea water's color here varies from emerald-green to blue, the sand is white, the water is crystal-clear. There are also many coconut plantations. Maceio Sea features natural pools and reefs located just a few meters off the coast and accessible only by tour boat or sailing rafts. Mundau Lake is another popular destination for bathing and sailing.
City's historical buildings include Historical Institute Museum, Cathedral of Our Lady of Pleasures, Deodoro Theatre, Municipal Market, Floriano Peixoto Palace (seat of state's government).
