Magadan is a port town on Okhotsk Sea and part of Russia's Magadan Oblast (Far East Russia), with population around 95,000. The port also serves as the gateway to Kolyma region, which Chukotka and Magadan Oblast.
Town's current-day economy is heavily based on Port Magadan, which houses shipbuilding facilities and homeports a commercial fishing fleet. Other major industries are gold mining and food processing (fisheries, pasta and sausage plants, distillery). The seaport is deepwater and fully navigable during most of the year (May through December).
The town is also served by Sokol Airport with mainly domestic flights linking to Moscow, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vladivostok, Anadyr, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk, Irkutsk, Keperveyem, Pevek, Evensk, Yakutsk, Yekaterinburg, Omolon, Omsukchan, Seymchan, Susuman. Kolyma Highway (R504) links Magadan with Yakutsk (Lena River, Siberia). Yakutsk is also the nearest road-accessible large city (at ~2000 km / 1200 mi).
The settlement was founded during the USSR times (in 1930, received town status in 1939) and initially served as a major transit point for labor camps prisoners who were engaged primarily in gold-mining operations. Later,Magadan developed as an export port for gold and other mined in Kolyma metals.
