Magong (fka Makung) is a port city in China's Taiwan Province and the seat of Penghu County. The county includes the Penghu Islands (an archipelago of 90 islands) in Taiwan Strait (separating China from Taiwan in the South China Sea). Other cruise port cities in Taiwan include Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung, and Hualien.
Magong City is Penghu's largest by population (60,000+) out of Penghu's total population of ~100,000. Penghu Islands are powered by Hujing Power Plant (on Table Island).
On Magong Island are the archipelago's airport (Penghu Airport) and principal seaport (Magong Harbor/port locode TWMZG) serving cargo vessels and passenger ships (ferries and cruise liners).
Penghu Airport (1977-opened as "Magong Airport") serves annually around 2,5 million passengers. Three airlines (Daily Air, UNI Airways, and Mandarin Airlines) connect the archipelago with mainland Taiwan (Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Kinmen, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei) as well as with Penghu's Qimei Island (via flights by Daily Air). However, the busiest routes are Magong-Taipei and Magong-Kaohsiung.
In 2023, Penghu Island was included in the schedule of Resorts World One and visited during 3-night/4-day roundtrip itineraries departing from Kaohsiung on Mondays. The voyages visit Magong/Penghu on Tuesdays and Hong Kong on Wednesdays, then return to Kaohsiung on Thursdays.
As a cruisetour (Taiwan-China travel) option, the company Resorts World Cruises offered tourists leaving from Kaohsiung (on Thursday) to disembark in Hong Kong (on Friday), book a 2-night hotel stay (in Hong Kong) then re-board the liner on Sunday and debark in Kaohsiung on Monday.
