Mamoudzou is a port city and capital of Mayotte (French overseas territories) in the Indian Ocean. The city is on Grande-Terre Island (aka Mahore) - Mayotte's main island (Comoros Islands). Grande-Terre island is in Mozambique Channel's northern part, between Madagascar (northwest) and Mozambique (northeast).
Geographically, Mayotte is part of Comoros (Comoro Islands), but after the 1975-held referendum, Mayotte (Maore) remains politically part of France. As such, since January 1, 2014, Mayotte is also an overseas territory of the European Union.
The city has population around 12,000 and is Mayotte's capital since 1977. The country's former capital was Dzaoudzi (on Petite-Terre Island). Mamoudzou has 6 satellite villages and is divided into 3 cantons. It has bank, shopping mall, Air France office, Air Mayotte office, tourist office, restaurants (Les Terrasses, Isijiva, Le Barfly, Mamoudzou La Kaz).
There is a ferry service for tourists between Grande-Terre and Petite Terre (ports Mamoudzou and Pamandzi). Mayotte is served by the Dzaoudzi Pamandzi Airport (International flights) located in Pamandzi.
