Maniitsoq (fka Sukkertopen) is a fishing port located on Greenland's central western coast. The town has population around 2,700, ranking it the country's 6th-largest. Maniitsoq is a ferry port for Arctic Umiaq Line (freight and passenger shipping company). Arctic Umiaq serves the south-western Greenland route roundtrip from Nuuk.

The local scenery features tall rugged mountains and deepwater narrow fjords. A famous landmark is the glacier-filled Evighedsfjorden (translated from Danish as "Fjord of Eternity") and its over 2 km high mountains. Archaeological finds indicate that this area has been settled for over 4000 years. The modern town of Maniitsoq was established in 1782 (as Nye-Sukkertoppen) by Danish colonists. In the 19th century, the town served as a major trading post for trade in reindeer hides.

Isortoq Fjord is located to the east of Maniitsoq town (approx 10 km / 6,2 mi away). It empties into the Davis Strait. Majorqaq River, one of Greenland's widest, empties into the fjord's head. Isortoq Fjord has length 45 km (28 mi) and is formed by the Majorqaq River Delta (flowing from the north) and the Isuitsup Kuua estuary (flowing from the east). Isortoq Fjord flows southwestward, and opens into an inlet of Davis Strait.

A 100 km (62 mi) wide circular region with unusual geology is believed to be the result of an asteroid or comet impact around 3 billion years ago. This unique region is centered 55 km (34 mi) southeast of the town of Maniitsoq. During the 3 billion years that followed the impact, the crater eroded down, and the now exposed features were buried 20-25 km (12-16 mi) below the surface when the event occurred. The erosion process is the reason why few remaining craters are now visible on the Earth.
