Manta is a Pacific Ocean port and city in Manabi Province (Ecuador). By population (around 220,00) the city is ranked Manabi's 2nd largest (after Portoviejo) and Ecuador's 5th largest. The city covers land area of approx 60 km2 (23 ml2).

Manta is Ecuador's biggest seaport. City's main industries are tuna fishing, processing and canning, with main exports to USA and Europe. Other industries include cargo shipping, chemicals, tourism. The city is served by the international airport Eloy Alfaro (combined civilian airport - military air base). Regularly scheduled flights connect to Barcelona (via Avior Airlines) and Quito (Avianca Ecuador, TAME). Between 1999-2009, Manta Air Base was used by US air forces to support anti-narcotics operations against Colombian drug cartels. In 2009, the Ecuadorean government didn't renew the lease.

Manta is famous for its annual international film festival and water sports activities (including surfing, water skiing, kitesurfing, scuba diving, sport fishing, windsurfing) popular because of the year-round steady climate. Manta also has some of South America's best beaches.

Port's cruising season runs October through August. During season 2018-2019, the cruise port had scheduled 15 ship calls - compared to 2017-2018 season's 22 calls.

Manta cruise terminal

On October 30, 2018, Agunsa (Chilean port terminal operator) inaugurated South America's newest cruise terminal "Terminal Portuario de Manta". The facility was part of an USD 177 million project, with investments by Agunsa Group. In 2016, the Chilean company signed a 40-year concession deal (until 2056) to develop and operate all Port Manta's facilities and services.

Besides the passenger terminal, Agunsa's port development project also included pier epansion (up to 300 m), 4 dockis / berths with total length 1 km, dredging (to max draft 12,5 m), purchasing and installing two Post-Panamax cranes (serving large-capacity boxships), new cargo elevators and ramp (serving cruise vessels).

On no-ship days, the new cruise terminal building is used as convention center.
