Manus Island is the largest of Admiralty Islands (PNG) and the country's 5th largest with total area 2100 km2 (811 mi2) and population around 50,000. Lorengau is the main port town (on the northeastern coast) and capital of Manus Province (Papua New Guinea).
The province is served by Momote Airport located on Los Negros Island. Both islands (Manus and Los Negros) are bridge-connected.
Manus is covered with jungles (lowland rainforests). Its highest elevation point (Mt Dremsel) is 718 m (2356 ft) and is on the southern part.
The island is famous worldwide for its Emerald green snail (aka "Manus green tree snail") whose shells are harvested and sold for making jewelry. The snail shell is colored in unusually vivid green. Overharvesting the snails led to a decline in their population. Rainforest logging is also a serious threat to the species' survival.
As part of Australia's Pacific Solution, in 2011 on the island was built a detention center for asylum-seekers. In April 2016, PNG's Supreme Court ruled that asylum seekers' detention on the Island was illegal.
