Martigues is a Mediterranean cruise port located northwest of Marseille. The town is part of France's Bouches-du-Rhone department (Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur) and is on the eastern end of Canal de Caronte. Martigues is a point of passage between the Mediterranean and the lagoon Etang de Berre (near Cote d'Azur / French Riviera). The town has land area approx 71 km2 (28 ml2) and population around 47,000.

The village was established in 1232 by Ramon Berenguer IV (aka Ramon Berenguer the Holy, 1114-1162), count of Provence. The settlement was built on a former Roman military campsite (Maritima Avaticorum). Town's bridges, docks, canals and large marina are the reason why it is often called "The Venice of Provence". Martigues is also famous for its cooperative winery La Venise Provencale, producing rose, red and white wines, including Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Clairette, Grenache.
