Mayreau Island is Grenadines' smallest inhabited isle - with land area 4 km2 (1,5 mi2) and population around 300. Most of the locals live in an unnamed village on Station Hill (hilltop in island's southwestern end). Thsi isolated community is accessible only by sea (tour boats and cruise ships). Most cruise liners anchor in Saline Bay and ferry their passengers ashore via the ship's tender boats (or Zodiacs).

1-lane concrete road connects Saline Bay's wharf with Saltwhistle Bay. On the island are available electricity (since 2002), elementary school, telecom building, Catholic church (opened in 1930), Pentecostal church. There is an overlook of Union Island, Tobago Cays and Canouan.

Mayreau Island gets much of its water from 3 rain catchments on its east side. One serves Saltwhistle Bay Resort, while the other two serve the village. Saline Bay was named for the salt pond east of the beach. In the past, salt was exported but now it is harvested for local use only. Mayreau is mostly populated by fishermen and supported by tourism. Upon completing primary education, local students attend secondary schools on St Vincent Island or Union Island. Mayreau also has a beachside resort area (on Saltwhistle Bay), which is a popular anchorage for yachts and pleasure boats.

For season 2018-2019, Bequia Island had scheduled/booked 88 cruise ship calls, St Vincent Island - 82, Mayreau Island - 43, Tobago Cays - 31, Union Island - 26, Canouan Island - 3.
