Meissen is an Elbe River cruise port and town in Germany's Saxony state, with population around 30,000. The town is located approx 25 km (16 mi) northwest of Dresden and is best-known for the Meissen porcelain, Albrechtsburg Castle, Meissen Frauenkirche (15th-century church), Meissen Dom (13th-century cathedral).
Meissen is famous for its porcelain manufacturing based on large local deposits of kaolin (china clay) and potter's clay. Meissen porcelain was Europe's first-ever high-quality porcelain, which production officially started in 1710. Today, along with porcelain, here are also produced various ceramics.
