Merzig (Germany Saarland)

Merzig is a Saar River (Moselle River) cruise port and town in Germany's Saarland state (Merzig-Wadern district) with population around 11,000. Merzig-Wadern (the city) includes a total of 17 municipalities and has total population around 30,000. Merzig is approx 35 km (22 mi) south of Trier and approx 35 km (22 mi) northwest of Saarbrucken (Saarland's capital city).

The town (as Martiaticum) was established by the Romans and first mentioned in the 4th century AD. Between 5th-9th-centuries it was ruled by the Franks and named Mercy. The Holy Roman Empire (800-1806) ruled this territory between 888-1333 AD. The city was officially created in 1974 as part of Saarland's territorial reform. The current-day city consists of Merzig (the town) plus the 16 municipalities surrounding it.
