Metz is a Moselle River cruise port and city in France's Grand Est region (Moselle department) with population around 115,000. The city is the department's prefecture and the region parliament's seat. Metz is approx 43 km (27 mi) from the Schengen tripoint/tri-border area (France-Germany-Luxembourg) and on the banks of two rivers (Moselle and Seille). TVG (high-speed trains) connect Metz with Paris City (Gare de l'Est) and Luxembourg City. From Louvigny (25 km / 16 mi to the south) Metz is connected via high-speed trains with Nantes, Rennes, Lille, Bordeaux.

The city and its surroundings are part of the protected parkland Parc naturel regional de Lorraine (Lorraine Regional Natural Park) - spreading between Metz and Nancy, spanning 3 French departments (Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle) and including a total of 193 communes. Metz has one of France's largest Urban Conservation Areas and 100+ buildings listed as "Monument Historique" (monuments with historical importance).

The city's current-day economy is based on steel and automotive industries, commerce (2000+ retailers), tourism, IT services. Among the largest companies with production plants in Metz are Groupe PSA (Peugeot Citroen), ArcelorMittal SA (steel manufacturing), SFR (telecom), TDF Group (radio-TV-telecom-multimedia services), the French banking groups Caisse d'Epargne (1818-founded) and Banque Populaire (1878-founded), the premium store chains Printemps (1865), Galeries Lafayette (1912) and Fnac (1954). The historic downtown has one of France's largest commercial promenades. Tourism is heavily promoted in recent years, especially after 2010 when was opened Centre Pompidou-Metz (modern and contemporary art museum, France's second-most popular cultural venue - after Paris' Louvre Museum), which annually attracts 0,5+ million visitors. Another major tourist attraction is Cathedrale Saint Etienne de Metz (annually 0,65+ million visitors).

As cruise port, Metz was included in the 2021 schedule of the German tour company Nicko Cruises (owned by Mystic Cruises) with the riverboat Casanova.
