Monemvasia (Greece)

Monemvasia is a port town and municipality (in Greece's Laconia region) located on a small island off mainland Greece (on Peloponnese's eastern coast). The island is linked to Peloponnese by a 200-m (660-ft) long causeway. Its area consists of a large plateau (~ 100 m above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long) on which is located a medieval fortress. Many Byzantine churches and stone walls remain from the Middle Ages. Municipality's seat is Molaoi. Monemvasia has total area approx 947 km2 (366 ml2) and population around 22,000.

In 375 AD, Monemvasia Island was separated from mainland Greece following an earthquake. Monemvasia Town was later built on the slope southeast of the rock that overlooks the bay. Most of the streets are narrow and fit only for pedestrian traffic. All medieval buildings are restored, many of them serving as hotels. In 1971, the town was linked through a bridge (on the western coast) connecting to GR-86 road. Places of interest include Christos Elkomenos Square, Monemvasia Fortress, Agia Sophia Church.
