Muhlhausen (Germany Thuringia)

Muhlhausen is an Unstrut River/Saale RIver/Elbe River cruise port and town in Germany's Thuringia state (Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis district) with population around 36,000. The town is located approx 5 km (3 mi) north of Niederdorla (Germany's geographical center), approx 50 km (31 mi) northwest of Erfurt (Thuringia's capital and largest city), approx 65 km (40 mi) east of Kassel (Hesse) and approx 50 km (31 mi) southeast of Gottingen (Lower Saxony).

The town was first mentioned in mid-10th-century (967 AD) and in late Middle Ages (5th-15th centuries) became one of Germany's most important trade cities - receiving Freie Reichsstadt (free city) rights in mid-13th-century as part of the Holy Roman Empire (962-1806). The medieval city Muhlhausen controlled total area approx 220 km2 (85 ml2) and had population around 10,000. Spared from destruction during WW2 (1938-1945), the town is today one of Germany's largest with perfectly preserved medieval architecture, including 11 Gothic-style churches, large patrician houses, completely preserved stone wall fortification.
