Nagoya is a port city, the largest in Japan's Chubu region (Honshu Island) and the Aichi Prefecture's capital. By population (around 2,3 million, metro over 9,1 million) the city is ranked Japan's 4th largest - after Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka.

Port Nagoya is located in Ise Bay, and is ranked Japan's biggest and busiest seaport, handling around 10% of the country's total shipping trade. The port is Japan's largest cargo port for exporting cars (mainly Toyota).

Nagoya is Japan's 3rd-largest metro region (Chukyo Metropolitan Area). The main industry is automotive. Toyota Industries, Toyota Boshoku, Toyota Lexus, Denso (auto parts), Aisin Seiki (auto components and systems) and JTEKT Corporation (machine remanufacturing and engineering) and Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation have their headquarters in or close to Nagoya City. Mitsubishi Motors has its R&D division here.

Japanese porcelain and pottery making has a long tradition here because of the suitable clay supplied from the surrounding area that is used for Seto ware and Tokoname ware production. Mechanized puppets ("karakuri ningyo") are also traditional craft. Robot technology is growing.

Nagoya City attracts domestic tourists (mainly from Chukyo metro). The seaport is among city's most popular attractions, housing the famous Public Aquarium, the Antarctic survey ship Fuji (permanently moored ship museum), South Pole museum, an amusement park. Isewangan Expressway features 3 bridges (called Meiko Triton) spanning Port Nagoya. A small man-made island is also part of the seaport, housing the wildflower garden Bluebonnet.

In 2018, the port handled 33 cruise calls from 4 different ships. In 2019, the cruise port had scheduled 42 ship calls from 8 different liners. As first-time visitors were booked Quantum of the Seas (Royal Caribbean), Diamond Princess (Princess Cruises), Silver Shadow (Silversea) and Amadea (Phoenix Reisen).

Nagoya cruise terminal

Port Nagoya's Garden Pier (cruise terminal) doesn't have capacity to berth larger liners. Bigger ships are docked at Kinjo Pier (berths 80-81) located approx 10 km (6 mi) to the south. Future plans include expansion of one of the Garden Pier's quays to allow docking of larger ships.
